What are fuel filters?
A fuel filter is a device that cleans the dirty diesel from your engine before it gets to combustion. It’s an important and necessary part of any vehicle. Make sure to always replace yours if they are not working properly or when replacing other parts in your car such as fuel pump/fuel lines/filters.
The difference between petrol and diesel fuel filter is that petrol filters are usually smaller. Theycan be mounted inline with the inlet fuel line, while diesel filters are often larger.
How do fuel filters work?
Fuel filters are a type of filter that removes impurities in the fuel like water, dirt, and rust from passing through to the injection system. The finer particles will be stopped by a mesh screen or a perforated metal plate inside the canister. While the larger particulate matter is captured by an absorbent pad made up of fibrous material.
Diesel engines use three-way fuel injection systems that have injectors mounted above each cylinder head; these injectors spray diesel engine oil into combustion chambers when needed for lubrication as well as air cooling purposes. As you might imagine there are many components involved in this process.
So it’s very important to keep your vehicle clean! If one thing goes out, then everything else suffers too – and that’s not something you want.

When should you change the fuel filter for Duramax?
Manufacturers recommend changing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 150,000 miles depending on the age of your car. This is because, after around seven years of driving, rust, dirt, and debris build up faster, clogging the filter.
There are a few signs that your fuel filter needs to be changed, but the best indicator is if you notice any change in how fast your car accelerates. If you experience hesitation or misfires, then this may be an indication of a clogged fuel filter.
Other symptoms of a bad diesel fuel filter include a strong odor of diesel fumes, brown or black smoke coming from the exhaust, and when the engine dies.
If you notice any one of these signs it is time to change your fuel filter!
How to check your Duramax fuel filter
The fuel filter is located near the engine. There are two ways to check if your car needs a new one, and both of them require a few simple tools that you can find in any automotive store or even around your house.
The first way involves taking off the air cleaner box on top of the engine. Then use an inspection mirror to see deep inside it so you can spot possible clogs from dirt and dust particles.
This method will not be as accurate because there are other areas where debris could cause problems with the flow, but it’s worth trying out anyway!
The second way is more convenient, but you will need a flashlight and the engine turned off. The filter can be seen in its entirety from above with access to all of it.
Shine the light inside and look for any clogs or debris that may have accumulated on either side of the cartridge-shaped piece of metal hanging down from what looks like an accordion tube – this part should not be covered by anything else than plastic wrap!
If any particles are obstructing the flow, then it’s time to replace your fuel filter!
How to change Duramax fuel filter
The Duramax is a tried and true engine that requires routine maintenance to keep it running well. A fuel filter change falls under this category, although the frequency of such an event varies depending on usage levels.
When you are notified by your truck’s onboard system (or if there was some sort of bad batch) to check for any issues with the filters, do not procrastinate! This will help keep your fuel system running smoothly and prevent any costly repairs.
Make sure to check the type of filter you have before buying a new one! The most common are paper or cellulose, which both require replacement around every 20K miles (or about half that time if driving in city-like conditions). Newer filters use traps with a longer lifespan, but the frequency of replacement will still depend on your driving habits.
Step 1. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes.
Step 2. Check onboard computer or dashboard alert light when necessary (or every 80K miles) for low fuel filter pressure.
Step 3. Assemble tools and supplies, including new fuel filter, newspaper, or old rags to prevent any spills from reaching the engine components, screwdriver (or ratchet), wrench
Steps 4. Disconnect battery cables on both ends of the truck’s frame near each corner–make sure you don’t touch metal with a grounding strap!
Steps 5. Unhook clamps connecting fuel lines at intake manifold; remove rubber hose clamp; loosen retaining bolts securing fuel filter housing cover to give enough room for removal of dirty paper-type filter.
Note orientation before removing it so later installation is easy.
Step 6. Install new filters in reverse order if installing cellulose traps which seals with an o-ring and doesn’t require a gasket
Step 7. Reassemble in reverse order and tighten clamps. Make sure to place paper towels along fuel lines before you secure them so that they don’t get dirty with leftover diesel vapors!
Steps 8. Reconnect battery cables, clean up any spills from the engine or ground (optional) and start truck back up.
Check for leaks around filters and other connections as well as between filter housing cover and intake manifold joints near the top of the new Duramax Filter.
If there are no visible leaks then your vehicle should be good to go!
